History //
Born into the Korin noble house Quen, Leila felt, for the most part of her life, that she didn’t belong there. She was always shy, quiet and studious, at first able to hide behind her siblings, who were born to be social creatures, and could handle the pressures thrown at them. Or so it seemed. To Leila, her older siblings were always the ones who were meant for the spotlight; meant to be first and foremost when company arrived, and after all, the family was proud of the parties that it would hold, of their confidence in any situation, and generally held to be self-important.
She was not her brother, Kara, who seemed gifted with the ability to play as both sexes, though after spending years of envying him, (along with developing feelings of affection for him that she isn't quite sure how to acknowledge), she now is no longer sure how she views him, though still seeks his approval in some ways. Her older sisters Flora and Fauna, were twins who were generally believed to share one mind; she hardly felt that she could fit in with them, even though they were all sisters.
Perhaps it is because of the closeness of the twins that motivated her to attempt to form a bond with her brother, though his bitter and antagonistic nature often made that very difficult as well. Yet there always will be some small sense of hope, of longing, that some day they may have some ideal relationship as siblings, though she knows that it is a ridiculous hope.
Her siblings aside, her parents, mostly her mother, was responsible for shaping her; after all, it was Lady Leena who made this generation of House Quen into what it stood for, not her father, Thomas. Her mother was quite controlling and domineering in all things, and intended for her children to fit the molds she had shaped for them.
Leila naturally did not fit her intended mold very well; in fact, she became quite a frustration for her mother; instead of her "condition" (as it was considered) improving, Leila seemed to instead, worsen, from the desired effect, developing stutters, tremors, and displaying other forms of anxiety, especially in her Mother’s presence, as well as when she became old enough for her parents to begin parading her around to suitors, wanting to get her married off as soon as possible so that there would be less reason to fuss over her.
Eventually an agreement was made between her parents and Lord Damien of Noye, to marry her off to his younger brother (and heir), Charles. At first Leila was terrified of the marriage and the prospect of it, and did whatever she could to avoid it, which included speaking of it to her parents and later on, refusing to read the journals, when she knew that Lord Damien desired answers of her.
After she was wed, however, Leila found some surprising changes in her life; one that for the first time, she was being quite ignored by her family. For the time being, she had fulfilled her duty for her Mother, and therefore was not worth spending any time being fussed over; had she finally grown into being a young Lady, in her own right? Leila found herself feeling surprisingly... comfortable with her husband, as they both come from families with somewhat tricky histories. She doesn’t feel that she truly knows all of his sides, however; and he doesn’t know hers.
Even though she was still in her family's home, she now had a husband, (a purpose, her family insisted); her brother was far away -- and partly out of mind, until she'd look at her journal and think of him; while he would say upsetting things to her, he still was far away, so perhaps it didn't matter); her older sisters were still preoccupied with themselves, as well as finding suitable marriages, and Leila simply felt ... calm, and at ease, for the first time in her life.
Until the day she discovered that she was pregnant.
Since then Leila has found herself filled to the brim with anxiety and confusion, and has not quite found that same inner peace that she had only a few months before.
Personality //
Leila is best described in one word: quiet. Socializing is well and fine... for other people. The solitude of Quen's library appeals far more to her. She's very soft-spoken, painfully polite, and uncomfortable and on edge around anyone but her brother; in other words, the complete opposite of her giggly, exuberant sisters. Social functions leave her nervous and trembly, which gives her a slight stutter when pressured.
Like her parents and brother, Leila is extremely intelligent. However, she doesn't feel she is any better than anyone else and prefers talking to commoners over nobles; less expectations of how she should be and act that way. No matter what rank, though, she loves an intellectual discussion or debate; a conversation with someone on an equal level is one of the few things that draws her out of the library.
Her greatest fault, at least in her eyes, is her 'lack of musical talent': when your sisters sing and your brother has played piano, there's no way to measure up. However, she is an accomplished writer of both poetry and short stories. But that's not as 'noble' or 'worthwhile' in her parents' eyes, and likely never will be.
Appearance //
Long hours in the library combined with her natural Korin heritage have paled her skin into an almost ghostly hue, giving her more the appearance of being frail or sickly when that is not actually the case. Long black hair is braided to keep out of her face at times, but most often hangs loose.
She could actually be called beautiful without lying; not in the brilliant, shining way of her sisters, or the adrogyny of Aekaran, but less noticeable if you aren't looking for it. Of course, the rest of her family is gorgeous; it would have been a nightmare for the reputation if she wasn't at least pretty.
